However, to prevent damage to the regulator, when the driving voltage exceeds 12V, an external 5V logic power supply must be used. The module is equipped with a high-capacity filter capacitor and freewheeling protection diodes to enhance reliability. Notes: 1. When the driving voltage (labeled as 12V input; actual input range 7V–12V) is between 7V and 12V, the onboard 5V regulator can power the logic circuit. In this case, the +5V pin on the interface should not receive input voltage but can supply 5V output for external use. 2. When the driving voltage exceeds 12V and is up to 24V (the chip supports up to 35V per datasheet, but conservative use recommends 24V maximum), remove the onboard 5V enable jumper. Then, connect an external 5V power source to the 5V input terminal to provide a 5V logic level control signal. The motor driver will only output current when the input signal is valid and the power supply is normal. Without a valid enable signal, no current will be delivered to the motor, even if power is present. This external 5V supply powers the L298N internal logic circuit.
